The set up
It’s a cold Autumn morning and a group of actors meet for the first time in the back room of a London pub. The Queens Wrist Theatre Pub once had a glowing reputation for breaking brand new writing and acting talent – but those days are long gone and storm clouds are gathering. Will the venue survive or are its days numbered…
Joanna: Early 20’s. Bright, bubbly. She recently graduated from drama school and is very keen. When she isn’t acting or auditioning she works in telesales or marketing or as a waitress. She has ambitions to be a star of stage and screen. She genuinely believes that she will get noticed based on her talent and qualifications alone ANY ACCENT
Gerald: 70ish. Gerald is a classically trained actor. He regales any crowd and often with stories of who he’s worked with. RADA trained he once had the chance - a slim chance of making it BIG but the dice didn't fall his way and others took the limelight and train to fame. He is beginning to get forgetful. ENGLISH RP ACCENT
Beryl Bromwich: 40ish. She calls herself the Actor/Manager of the renown Queens Wrist Players. The Queen’s Wrist being a pub theatre on the fringes of North London. She was formerly for a very short period a TV game-show hostess. When she speaks it is full of anger and bile. On committee of the local Actors Guild and very self important. ANY ACCENT
Gloria Hole: 60ish. Gloria once thrilled the nation with her performing poodles. She is in a civil partnership with Ashley her life companion. She was formerly known as 'Gareth'. ANY ACCENT
Along with her partner (Ashley) used to travel the variety theatre circuit of the UK - then TV was invented and consigned that form of entertainment to the trash can. They now run a guest house in Battersea, London offering cheap actor rates.
Ashley Hole: 60ish. Ashley is henpecked by Gloria but at one time in the past was a hypnotist of note. BRITISH REGIONAL ACCENT
Melodi: late 30’s. A dim glamour model who has only one ambition in life to become FAMOUS. She has no acting or singing or dancing skills. She won a Miss wet t-shirt competition and was signed by a local agent. She is an innocent being exploited by ruthless people. LONDON / ESTUARY ACCENT
Mr Mammon: 50ish. Pub landlord. Rough and tough and no nonsense. He cannot stand the acting fraternity and would be happy to see them move on from his pub where they rehearse 'silly little plays'. However they keep paying the rent for the hire of the rehearsal room and the small theatre space at the back of the pub. ANY ACCENT
William Weatherfield: 70ish. Ex actor now successful producer. Very handsome and sharp minded. BRITISH REGIONAL ACCENT
Hope Rhyder: 20's. A new and inexperienced writer who is extremely naïve ANY ACCENT
Tilly: 20s. A simpleton assistant to Beryl who is very intimidated and bullied by Beryl. ANY ACCENT
Jack: 70ish. Famous American film star
